Writing Monday is about the projects belonging to Space_wolf and other such things.

Last week we talked about the dragon rider Elrik with two more elder dragons – Morrow and Lorik. This week we look at some of the mages.

Colum apt Sul, Layman Geomancer.

  Name: Colum apt SulDreamcast actor/actress:

David Krumholtz

(Charlie Eppes, Numb3rs)

Age: 25

Race: K’talian

Defining Features: Dark mid-length wavy hair, dusky skin, wry smile, dark eyes.

House (if placed): Mage

About:

Colum is a worker of forbidden magic in the Academy at Ses’al’hadril-nar, gifted in golum craft and earth reading (geomancy). He prefers to work alone at his “art” and avoids studying to advance his geomancy, which is a mainstream magic and is the form that gives him is ranking in the Karesh. He stumbled across Ifan in another time and says he has come to regret it as he has become Ifan’s “magic” friend who, for a small fee and some ancient shiny trinket, will help him. This time, he is swept along without being asked to somewhere cold and he is most definately not happy.

Where did he come from:

I was sat watching Numb3rs and the bubbly, highly intelligent (without understanding where everyone else is coming from) character of Charlie Eppes gave me the image of a talkative, smart but non-people-person persian mage. And Colum was born.

He gives me something to put odd moments of humor, where he is off key to the others. He also allowed me to explore some darker “forbidden” magic, journey into another country and to provide Ifan with an ally as his academic. In previous versions of Sons of Lur, Colum would have formed part of the accompanying clerks or one of the archeologists or an academic. He has never been named, but he has existed as some form (whiny and otherwise) within the adventuring party.

Why the Dreamcast?:

David Krumholtz inspired Colum’s character. I would have no one else.

Brejik, Queen’s Magus.

Name: Brejik Dreamcast actor/actress: Lorenzo De Angelis

(Alecto, King Arthur)

Age: 28

Race: Rheganese

Defining Features: Dark hair, dark eyes, very pale. Sense of something else about him, apparant mood swings.

House (if placed): Mage

About:

Brejik is known in the court as the Queen’s mage, hinting at his closeness to the future Queen. He was once heralded as a future Magus, perhaps even a Lord Archmagus, one of the King’s mages. But now his old master has little to do with him and he has become one with the shadows, one about whom the court gossips. For such a shining star, he has fallen from grace.

Where did he come from:

Brejik was originally Malek’s brother (that’s not to say there isn’t a chance he isn’t …), a prince of Rhegan. Now, however, he is from a similar background to Alrissa, raised by his magics to the court. So perhaps it is no wonder they have something in common. However, Brejik is not an evil character – he’s just involved in some dark business.

Why the Dreamcast?:

Pale, thin, wan, generally with a look of tempered fire, Lorenzo De Angelis fits with how I view Brejik. Manipulated. Lost. But there’s still something there …

Lord Archmagus Kormark De La Mer, a man with a sorrow.

Name: Kormark, Lord Archmagus De La MerDreamcast actor/actress: Liam Neeson

(Godfrey, Kingdom of Heaven)

Age: 60

Race: Rheganese

Defining Features: A strong man, a man of power, Kormark is still a man of court even at his age. Dark haired with silver streaks running above his ears, piercing eyes.

House (if placed): Mage

About:

Kormark is a man with a deep sorrow. Father of Gretham, Elrik and Little Lamb (Laurona), he still mourns the passing of his first love and is uncomfortable with his marriage to his wife. Gretham’s mother was a Lowlander shamaness who channelled the spirit of the pack. But his family would not allow him to marry, even though she bore him two sons before she died.  Lady Emile, Baroness De La Mer was a marriage to secure a legal heir upon the death of Kormark’s brother (childless) and the titles bestowed by this marriage will pass to Laurona upon his death. His old title, Lord Woodbourne, was gifted to Gretham on his wedding day, preserving his son’s right to lands. Once master to Brejik, he distrusts his apprentice and the company he keeps. Lorik is his only friend at court whom he trusts, aware of the scholar’s true nature. But Kormark has a secret he dare not share. A secret that could affect the future …

Where did he come from:

Kormark has existed, in some from, since the beginning. Originally the grumpy mage who sends them on their journey, he has developed into more of a background character, one who holds plot lines together and generates more intrigue. He began to play a greater role as Lorik developed and as Taynor’s storyline took form.

Why the Dreamcast?:

Liam Neeson would make an excellent mage, particularly one who has such a history as Kormark. Plus he and Jeremy Irons would have good on screen chemistry as two old men who know more than they are letting on.
