If you want to see something new this weekend, go and see the new Tron film. That is not a request. That is an order.

End of line.

Now, I’m a fan of the original film. Yes, it was before my time but oh boy – originally the cutting edge of CG graphics, live action was painstakingly edited cell by cell by artists and experimental computer graphics artists. It’s dated with it’s eighties off kilter photography but as they say, good story telling does not age. And Tron’s vision will always live on.

Now, fast forward 20-odd years and here we have Tron: Legacy. A continuation and a new dream. With the advent of 3D films, the world of the Grid, with it’s enticements and marvellous creations is the perfect setting for this new technology. If you reach out, it feels like you can almost touch it.

The musical score is understated and brilliant, a fusion of classical and electronic pulses which add beautifully to the menace and action of this world. I am not an electronic fan, and you won’t find me on the dance floor to the usual heavy beats, but Daft Punk’s score is elegant and catchy and is an album I will be buying soon.

And the colours are breathtaking. Simplistic and in monotones of white and oranges, you learn to identify the menace behind one and the peace behind the other. The costumes themselves are quirky but suit the characters, ranging from some figure hugging outfits for the programmes in white to the long black coat of Flynn, with it’s luminous white lining adding menace to our User’s movements. Coupled with the clever use of CGI to “de-age” Flynn to give us Clu, and you have a believable menace on your hands.

I have to say that, having watched Tron beforehand was worthwhile, having already immersed myself into the digital world beyond, but oh my – I left the cinema breathless and giddy, feeling that this film has risen to the challenge of the original and should not leave fans wanting. Indeed, it may have surpassed it’s creator, allowing the dream of Tron to continue.
